After harvest, cover crops keep roots growing when cash crops are not. Their canopy helps shield bare ground from rain and wind; their roots improve soil structure and water movement. They also help capture leftover nutrients, support soil biology, and leave a more resilient seedbed for the next crop.
This approach reflects well-established conservation principles promoted by USDA NRCS and university extension research.

Kevin and Denise started Engel Family Farms with a belief that hard work, sound judgment, and care for the land would create something lasting. That foundation still guides every acre we farm.
Today, their three children—Chris, Savannah, and Casey—are all active in the operation and lead much of the day-to-day work. Together, the family brings hands-on experience, a shared work ethic, and a long view of what responsible farming should be.

Based in Hanover, Virginia, our family farms across Virginia and eastern North Carolina. Wherever we work, our commitment to the land stays the same.
Virginia
Our farming footprint reaches as far north as Caroline County, west to Nelson County, east to Chesapeake, and south to Sussex County.
North Carolina
We farm in Elizabeth City and near Terra Ceia and Washington, as well as in the Bayboro and Aurora areas.
